It is perhaps Mo Yan’s most famous novel, both in China and in the West, not least because of the successful film. It tells the story of four generations of a family, though focussing on the middle two Mo's genius is telling a compelling tale involving complex, three-dimensional characters in a style which is direct and gritty but also mystical and rich with symbolic imagery. The ever-present sorghum of the title is a metaphor for life and death, safety and menace, and, above all, blood, red blood. Mo moves the reader back in forth in time.

The book, which is about the Japanese invasion of China, scares the reader with the fact that Mo Yan was born and raised in one of the invaded places. Red Sorghum, written by Mo Yan, tells the story of the Chinese battling Japanese intruders as well as each other during the 1930s. Furthermore, it details the tragedy of the Chinese defending and preserving their culture through a series of flashbacks spanning three generations. Written by people who wish to remain anonymous Red Sorghum is a braided story with three different strands, in that the story combines elements of three different generations of the same family, the Shandong family.
